Is the a solution into which I can plunge my old trusty secatures for a variable length of time to keep them steralised but not send them rusty?

I'm not aware of a liquid solution you can leave them in, no.

But you could always wipe them with Jeyes fluid or other disinfectant on a rag??

Trisodium phosphate, a.k.a. TSP, if it is allowed there.

If you just want to sterilize the blades, a boiling water bath will do, or if the whole tool is metal, no plastic handles, boil water in a frying pan and submerse the whole tool.

I think a wipe in between plants with an antiseptic wipe is sufficient. I think that is the RHS advice to clean between plants, they might recommend a substance, but I don’t think you need to leave them soaking in anything.

Here’s what I found on the RHS for you

Dry with an old towel and then oil, remembering that any brush or cloth should also be disinfected

We use to have TCP ( boss called it TomCat Pee) smelt  like it to used it to sterilise pruning /grafting knives and securtare blades  jezza
