I live in the peak district and want to grow a damson tree. Is there a variety that would do better this far north or am I not far enough north to have to worry.

Is there much difference between the varieties when making Damson Jam?

Where can I purchase the best quality tree?

R V Rogers of Pickering are a very good fruit nursery that do mail order too.

If you google them, they will be able to advise on varieties.

Not sure about the jam question though.

Damsons are hardy throughout the UK. A good variety is Merryweather Damson with bigger, juicier fruit than Shropshire Prune. They are both good for jam.

You should have no problems in Derbyshire as they grow wild in Cumbria. The Lyth valley is famous for its damsons.
