My thermostat has a dial in the middle which I have lined up with the 16c.   If it dropped below that it would come on.  I have resisted, but if I wanted it on, I would simple turn the dial anti-clockwise.  I can hear it click, I have just done it and it clicked on at 17.5 c    Didn't leave it on although I am cold.  That must be one of the few things I can hear, with my H/aid turn on full and my ear pressed to it   Mrs Bouquet

It was actually a 'metaphorical' turning up of the thermostat (which I didn't do anyway of course! )

I switch it to the frost setting in summer which effectively over-rides the temperature setting (unless the temperature in the house drops below 5C or thereabouts! )

Thanks for the replies - any suggestions for Coir blocks? There seems to be a large choice out there and they seem to be so much more expensive that the ones i got from Wilko originally

Surely it would at least halt growth for a period of time until the foliage can regrow? Isn't that what happens when the foliage gets killed by frost, it grows back but harvest time is put back a couple of weeks?
I'm not sure it would work now - I think that the 'growing back' may use nutrients from the tubers themselves to power the regrowth, maybe spoiling the harvest?
That's why I'm suggesting try it and see  :D

al78, many people just use their thermostat as an on off switch - so it's their choice whether the heating switches on or off in the 'summer', not the thermostat. I just turn mine up to 18C when I want to turn it on, simple really....

Yesterday I had to keep smacking my hand to stop it twiddling the thermostat in an upward direction!

Managed to resist it, although if it had been wet as well as cool here, I would have certainly succumbed.

Turning the thermostat up doesn't make your home heat up any faster. That is a function of the power of the boiler. There is no good reason to turn it up if it gets chilly, you must have set it to that temperature for a reason, that reason being that is a comfortable temperature, so why raise it and consume more fuel? Even better, put another layer on, after all I suspect you wear more clothes in winter when even a mild winter day is colder than a cool summer day.

I'm not sure they would stop growing this early in the season, though.
If you think about it, when the tops are frosted, they regrow from lower down the stem, don't they?
Potatoes stored below ground, in clamps' like people used to in the 'old days', were always slugged and some rotten, if we got any wet weather.

If you really can't store them above ground, you may as well try cutting the tops off and see what happens. You've nothing to lose, have you? If you do please let us know if it works :)
