B****r (now with hope and piccies)
« on: May 01, 2008, 12:24 »
Its happened again. Lotty and Blossom sitting on Poland X or Silkie X eggies, one hatches and they try to kill it. Lotty did the same with Precious last year   Does this mean she is just a bad hen that doesnt make a good mummy  I didnt think there was such thing. Anyway, I took this dear little chick out and put it with one of my broody Silkies in the other coop and so far she has accepted it. There are lots more eggies under Lotty and Blossom, should I move them all or leave it to Mother Nature and see what happens :? Fingers crossed for new chick whatever tho.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

So far so good.....keep checking and chick still ok-ish. One eye closed. Silkie def taken to mummyhood.  BUT.......she is sitting on other eggies, will she get bored with them as chickie gets older or will she sit tight, what do you think?

:) Everything crossed Jelly, she looks like a real cutie and what a star your little silkie is! She'll probably carry on sitting until the chick starts to want to move away from the nest so if she can't get far from her mum, then less chance that mum will abandon the rest of her eggs. Maybe also feed mum close to the nest so she doesn't need to leave except for a poo!

Every day she, (well lets hope she's a "she!), gets stronger the more chance of her surviving.

Keep up with piccies as she grows!

Judi

Back today for a few hours and Gabrielle still going very strong, eye open now and all looking good. Her Mummy, Dusty and her are in a cage so they have water and food daily. Poo removed also so she is still quite happy to sit on her own eggies  You are so right Judi about Silkies making good mummies, she is the only chicken that has ever been prepared to adopt a chick    :D

How long til her eggs are due to hatch? I'd be worried that she will give up on the eggs in favour of the chick.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
