Bonsai Trees Question
« on: February 22, 2009, 16:22 »
My OH got a lovely Bonsai Tree at Christmas but there seems to be a lot of conflicting statements on the Internet relating to a successful watering regime.  Some sites advise misting the leaves daily with an occassionally "plunge" to soak the roots - others tell just the opposite.  Does anyone have a definitive answer or experience that has worked for them?

As asked what type of tree is it?
How big is it?
What size and depth of pot is it in?

Is something going wrong with it? Seems that you must have had it for 2 months now.

I have to assume this is an indoor bonsai species as otherwise it wold not need any misting etc at the moment.
OK, so if it is, you need to give it a good hours's soak once a week, in tepid water (no food at present, but then a VERY small amount each week (about quarter strength of indoor pot plant food). Leave the whole pot immersed and then drain after an hour.
Keep in full light but not sunshine.

It will need pruning regularly other wise it will gorw all out of shape. Need to know what sort now to tell you about this. I have 15 outdoor ones, some are over 25 yrs old now, youngest just 4.

Good luck!

I agree with sunshineband.  Submerge the pot in tepid water.  I usually leave it there for 10 minutes after the bubbles stop.  I mist every other week in winter but more regularly in spring and summer.  I also put the tree outside on hot summer days for a bit of fresh air.

All
Very many thanks for all your help.  Sadly I do not know what sort it is as it was a gift and the labelling gave nothing away.  It is aprox 8 inches high and still in the pot it was purchased with - that is approx 6"x2" and about 2" deep.  Reading your tips I think it may be getting slightly more water than suggested so I will adjust accordingly.
