I have just moved house and the garden has about fifteen rose bushes. Some are trained against walls or fences and some are bush/standard/shrub types. There are no clues as to the variety, but they seem to have been kept reasonably in trim. I am a bit of a novice on roses so would you let them be this year or prune right back as I think you are supposed to round about now?

If you prune them back to buds that face in the direction you would like them to grow, to create the shape you are aiming for ie flattish to the fence for some, round heads for the standards and open bushes for the others, you won't go far wrong.

They would appreciate some rose food, or very well rotted manure (not touching the stems though)

Thank you ssb for advice, it is great to have help from someone who knows. And yes I feel very lucky to inherit all those roses and am really looking forward to seeing what they all are.

I had pruned my roses in the autumn, but I've been gardening (in the garden) today and found I'd missed a couple of bits so pruned them today - nice new growth sprouting from the autumn pruning though.

Also pruned everything else, hibiscus, lilac, wisteria, clematis, something which the name escapes me - darn short term memory loss!!
