Day 20 under the Broody - Cheap Cheap
« on: April 30, 2012, 09:51 »
I've just been down to encourage the broody to stretch her legs and whilst she was off i had a listen to the eggs.
The first 2 i picked up and tapped, they tapped back. The third one i picked up i felt movement followed by cheap cheap's. i turned it over and there are the first signs of pipping.

So excited (this is the first time i've hatched under a broody)

On the not too good point, i found a kitten in the garden harassing the quails, dont know where it came from. Wouldnt normally have happened but the chickens are not free ranging at the moment otherwise they would have seen to it.

Just leave it all to your broody, they are brilliant at hatching chicks.

When you have a nice little brood of fluffy chicks is when a bit of care from you really pays off, you just have to make sure she has everything she needs to do a good job.

Good luck, are they a special breed?

Hi

They are cream legbars. At least we will know what sex they are without having to wait.

I did wonder if she would sit it out as she is still young herself but she has. And the other chickens have been very protective of the coop area that she has been in.

I've got French Copper Blacks and Welsummers in the incubator (she went broody at the same time as i set the incubator so bought a few eggs for her to sit on)
Its just as well she can pretty much get on with it as i may have my hands full

Still, i won't count my chickens until ............

Finally day 21 whoop whoop

Went and let them out and the Broody was moving for no one.

I called the children (all in our pj's), gently lifted her around the edges and so far 2 of the 5 are out, we only had a quick glimpse before the children melted with oo's and ar's

Its day 20 in the incubator and i can hear cheaping

photos to follow, i need to workout how to resize

it worked  :D.
Now please leave the broody alone, she will sit for a few more days so that the others will hatch and then she will bring them out for food and water. The chicks can go for at least 72 hours without food and water so don't worry. If she goes back in and sits away from the other eggs then discard them - she doesn't think they will hatch and won't sit on them anymore.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Chick update

a third egg hatched sometime yesterday, unfortunately i found it dead on the coop floor quite away from the nest.
Not sure if it had come out of the nest and couldnt get back in and got too cold or died in the nest and broody had quicked it out.
Bit dissapointed as it was a female chick.
This leaves 2 eggs in the nest, not sure if they have hatched or will hatch.
When i put the other birds away last night i could hear a frantic cheaping, one of the 1st chicks had got out of the nest and couldnt back in (there is a lip at the edge of the nest boxes) popped it back near broody and all is well. Broody has been eating a little, no poop yesterday and i'm not sure if she is drinking.

In the incubator - (copper blacks and welsummers) came down this morning to 2 fluff balls copper blacks. there was 2 other eggs that  were showing early signs. went out for 20 minutes and both chicks were fully out when i got back - missed the action. I thought it would take hours.
still lots to go yet
