My new year clear out today, just to check to see what is lurking unused and out of date. I was expecting to have to replace a few spices and stuff like baking powder.
I am sure I did the same exercise last year, but somehow today I managed to find tahini (unopened ::)) best before May 2012, plus several other really out of date products.
My bin bag ended up a bit fuller than I expected

 Glad it's not just me then :nowink:

Not wishing to outdo anyone here - I'm regularly finding things before 2000 in my elderly fathers cupboards. I'll post a pic here next time he pulls another such tin out "for dinner".
He opens them, has a sniff, and then decides if it's good or not!
-
Sealed canned or jar food is fine. spices just loose their flavour a bit I just use more.

Ditto MC! :D

Spices have dates  ermmmm never knew that. I may beat that 2000 date
-
I don't do a lot of baking, so most of my spices are for curries. If you keep them too long you lose all the top notes and it just doesn't taste the same to me :)
-
... you lose all the top notes ...
I've heard of singing for your supper - what do you make, Aria Curry?

I just cleared some old pastas out the cupboard this very evening. Cannellonia and lasagne 2012.
On the plus side I found two bags of Crozets buckwheat pasta both in date (well, ish :D :tongue2:)
Been googling recipe ideas to use up a nog of parmesan, a pot of creme fraiche and a chunk of chorizo. Tomorrow's dinner sorted.
Good to have a rummage! :D

sounds tasty CQ :D

That cannelloni & lasagne would be fine I'd have thought. I shall be having a clear out in the next week or so when DD moves out next week. I'm aiming to 'share' what's in the cupboards with her & make her up a hamper of sorts.

I think most people should eat the contents of their freezers also. Far too much stuff is left far too long. Every now and again we purposefully don't go to the shops so that we have to eat what's in!
-
I am doing that now. Scratting up ingredients but making some flavourful meals. Getting a bit sparse now though :D
-
my freezer really needs sorting out too - the trouble is being under 5 feet tall I cant reach to the bottom of a chest freezer lol
-
Going to empty the bottom draw where the mystery objects lurk defrost one at a time and eat it whatever it is
-
We did our freezers today we put the contence in a book so when its used it gets marked off and i can see at a glance what ive got and which draw its in., next is the cupboard under the stairs where i keep tins, jars and dried stuff it'll take a while lucky for me hubby has navy efficiency .

I dont think I dare ....

It has to be done ha ha .

I never seem to use the bulk of my spices before their expiration date oi! I have loads of fruit in the freezer to use up before the next growing season, but that will likely go fast as it can be used for smoothies :). I don't buy much canned stuff since I bottle so much of my own but I'm more likely to use my old bottled stuff than old tinned food from the store. I used some tomatoes from 2013 to make chili the other day. 😊
-
Were they ok some times they can be a bit tinny .

We only buy food for four days of the week and on the other three eat things from the freezer, store and cupboards. Means we look in them all every week so have an idea what is actually there. saves that 'pushed to the back' thing. Learned my lesson last year when I gutted all the cupboards and had to throw a lot away, which was awful :(

I do my best work when I'm scratting up! :tongue2: It makes you think so much more about your ingredients and how to get the best of out them. Makes you put your thinking cap on :)

They were fine. Bottled the season before last with water and lemon juice. Since they were in glass they didn't have any "tinny" taste to them at all. :)

That's a really good idea Sunny. I try to check the cupboards & freezers & plan a menu using what we have & make a shopping list from there. I try to use the things in the freezers on my working days to save time, although sometimes they seem to be more difficult to sort, might need to label better
-
Labels are vital. I have found that stewed rhubarb a bit of a surprise when you are expecting chicken curry
-
   I know that feeling ;)
I do keep a written list of everything I put into the freezer, so I know what main meals are in there. Whether it properly labelled and I grab what I think I am grabbing is another matter
The component parts of meals are in a drawer together as well, so the cooked beans, stock, bits of cheese and whatever, are all in the same place for perusal :)
I had been using up the cupboard contents all January, but the clear out did throw up some shockers  Late new years resolution is to keep pulses, flours and the like to a few bags at a time so they get used. I did cook all the beans ready for meals, but some were pretty old and took a lot longer than they should of ::)
-
Those old beans can take forever to cook, even when you have soaked them overnight
-
Any ideas about using up wheat flakes I don't eat muesli any more?

You could add them to crumble toppings, or maybe mix with grated cheese and use to top savoury dishes like macaroni cheese or gratin :)

brilliant thanks savoury crumble Thursday dinner :D

Finally found something in the cupboard 3 years past its expiry date and which is firmly OH's. Given the stick I get for using elderly-ish ingredients, I can't begin to describe the warm fuzzy feeling of triumph.... :D
Though, inspired by this thread we are eating 3 meals a week from stores to try and manage the stocks downwards.
-
Mystery freezer item one any guesses?
-
Is it...pizza dough? Either that or a moon rock lol 🌝
-
Ha ha we have those we call them brown bags what ever they are .

Bread saved for crumbs :(

good week coming up to do a freezer sort out
it will be below freezing most days so you can pop everything outside whilst you do the deed ;)
-
It actually turned out to be bubble and squeak had it for dinner today very tasty.

. Every so often I make the family a mixed meat stew as some of the labels come off. Its usually the meals that are ad hoc are generally thought of delicious but I cook by the bung it method and never get things to taste the same twice over. :D
-
My brown bag ended up being a small ammount of mince, onion sweetcorn so i chucked in more onion and mushrooms and made cottage pie .
did under the stairs today took a while .
