Mixing chicks
« on: August 16, 2009, 12:16 »
I need some advice, yet again!

After two disastrous hatchings I find myself with a pen containing 4 pullets and one cockerel at 14 weeks old and another pen with one pullet, still with it's mother, at 9 weeks old.

I have about 20 hens in a run without a cockerel.

The hen is hacked off with being in a run with the chick and obviously wants out. I don't want the chick to be left alone.

Could I put the young cockerel in with the younger pullet, then put the pair of them in with the other pullets in about a fortnight with a view to putting them all in with the hens a fornight after that. The cockerel will then be 18 weeks old - will he be old enough to keep the hens from attacking the pullets?
All advice and suggestions welcomed.

Yes, put the young cockerel with her, when I put my chicks out side I put an older cockerel with them, sometime even adult cockerels, they look after them.

Thanks Michelle,

Will put the young cockerel in with the young chick tonight and put the mother hen back in the main run and see what happens in the morning!

Mother chicken is now back with the laying hens. Young cockerel in a small hut with a much younger pullet with no fighting. Remaining pullets seem a bit dissoriantated but have finally all gone into their hut.
