If, and its a big if, there was a catastrophe and we had to rely on our own survival instincts, then yes I would.
we just rely on mine for the eggs.
Happiest in the countryside.

We battle with the idea of rearing birds to eat.  :(   It was part of our plan when we moved here but, somehow we just don't seem to have the heart. We know it's really hypocrytical...let someone else rear, kill etc and never know what sort of a life the bird has had, but they're all so endearing aren't they!   :)  We don't think we could maintain a distance and not get attached ...we thought about getting ugly ones, all the same, and definately...no names but we still just talk about it and beat ourselves up for not doing it!

I think we're just too soft and our birds know it...maybe one day but I doubt it! Good on those that can do it as, if you eat chicken, turkey etc. someone has killed it and you never quite know its history.

Oh sorry, I had to laugh at the guinea pig one!  But Bodger did say who has 'hatched' reared and eaten, and as far as I remember, you don't 'hatch' guinea pigs!!

In theory we'were planning to rear and eat our own, but having had to dispatch one sickly old hen last month, i find I've become a bit squeamish. I couldn't eat any of the old timers, hens or the cockerel, but surplus of growers is less of a problem  . Not giving them names is the key!!
Any advice on dispatching larger fowl - some of my sussex are huge, and I want the end to be as quick as possible?
