Catch crop before the beans go in
« on: May 13, 2011, 17:04 »
I managed a good catch crop of of little baby turnips. I have just pulled the last of them up to make way for the runner and french beans.  Lovely in salads.
My question is what other catch crops planted in the same year do other folks manage before the beans go in?
I have a propagator to start things off early and can use cloches.
Do beetroot work?  What else can I expect to get a crop with?

I always sow rocket between rows of anything thats going to be there long enough.I always sow really thickly and cut about 5 inches high when harvesting so they keep coming. Not strictly catch croping but it's all about packing as much in as I can

I have Rocket early potatoes in one third of the runner bean row. I shall plant the third and final sowing of runner seeds into large pots in 10-14 days time and around the middle of June will dig the spuds and replace them with the beans which should be at the ready to start twining stage by then.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

I grow beetroot both as a root crop and as a salad crop (the leaves) so thats a start
Generally its the salad stuff for a quick turnaround

My leek seedbed usually ends ups in the beean bed...

I always have a couple of cell trays of stuff for filling in on the go.  Salad leaves mainly, but also spring onions and beetroots.   I sow a small cluster of seeds and plant the whole clumps out as and when I have a gap.  If I chuck a few trays away over the season because there is no room, then I eat what I can off the seedlings and don't worry about it.

Salad leaves done this way can be cropped within a few weeks, spring onions more like 6 weeks and beetroot really needs about 8-10 weeks unless you want really baby beet  :)
