Getting new allotment end of March
« on: February 01, 2024, 18:14 »
Hi, hello from Wiltshire.
Very excited to be getting an allotment at the end of March. Have been for a good look around to try and work out which one it is and am 'guessing' its grass covered and very 'humpy dumpy'. So a lot of work for a 65yr old. Need to do lots and work out a way of collecting water as sadly no mains water  but I am acquiring a rather large water butt tomorrow for next to nothing. Anyway look forward to finding out loads on this site.

Welcome to the forums and good luck with your new allotment!

If it is that plot, there's lots of useful advice on the main website too: https://www.allotment-garden.org/allotment-information/
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hello from me, and good luck with the plot!
Take some advice and don't try to do it in a hurry, take it slow and save your back  ;)

Make sure you take photos when you first start, because there will come a time when you think you've made no progress, but then look back and are proud of yourself!

Hi
My name is Richard from South Wales, and I am 70 years old. Just to mention if you don't mind? Please take it easy when working on your new allotment. I was given the following info many years ago by a Head Gardener who used to look after the flower beds at Roath Park Lake in Cardiff. He suggested that I mark out about a meter width across the plot, and put a line across. This will be your starting point, and that's all you are going to do on your first visit. Cover the rest with black polythene, until your are ready to move on.

Little and often is a great idea.

I always find that my hamstrings object strenuously to the first few sessions of digging each year. I can hardly sit down 2 days later - though it does improve after that period
