Begonia corms from plug plants.
« on: August 10, 2021, 09:04 »
Am I right in thinking my begonia plug plants will have developed corms over the summer so that I can save them for next year?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

If they're the large-flowered ones, they do  :)
Not sure about the small-flowered border begonias though.

Yes the big ones will.  The small ones I leave in their containers or ground and cover with a bit of leaf mould or similar and they just grow the next year.   :)  Mrs B

I didn't know that, Mrs B.

You're the Begonia expert here, and helped us get all ours going, so when you write a book about them, I'll buy a copy as long as you sign it!

Mrs Growster overwinters all our geraniums in the GH, as the following year, they come out well in advance of any new annuals we might buy, and give a splash of colour after the daffs etc have died down!

But this year has been fabulous for begonias, and we'll do better next year! They seem to like all this rain too...

Oooh that's good as they are the big ones and most measure between 41/2" to 5" in diameter. I don't know which variety I prefer, the usual bright mixed ones or the Sunset mixed ones. Anyway, I'll save them all so I now need some advice as to the best way to do that so I can plant them again next year.

Do you mean begonias or geraniums, Goosey?

Begonias dear Mr G. Here's a pic taken on 7th July and it's now looking twice as big.

Fabulous, Goosey!

I love the foliage on begonias too, it's so lush and colourful!

I do too. I chose the variety with the bronze-red leaves which contrasts really nice with the blooms. I got them from Gardening Direct which I always use for plug plants because they're great plants, really good value and well-packed too.
