Cucumber problem
« on: April 24, 2012, 08:18 »
Hi guys,

I planted some cucumbers back on the 8/2/12 they have been growing great on the kitchen window seal, they are about 5"- 7" tall with the third set of true leaves coming though.  The problem I'm having is I've just moved them onto bigger pots, i was very careful not to disturb the roots in any way, but one of the plants has got very weak and the leaves are starting to curl slightly.  I've use supports to keep it up right, will it recover or shale I plaint another two seeds just in case?

thanks dan
Dear God, Please can you stop the wind and rain and bring on the nice weather. Amen

I think it is either Grannie Annie or Aunty who says...

Cucumbers will look for any reason what so ever to die. Only time will tell but wise to re sow.

Not me Aidy.

I always plant mine (in the greenhouse) on a mound of compost to keep their stems dry when watering.  They WILL die if you don't.

would it be ok to put them in an unheated greenhouse yet?  if not will have to try again in pots as only have the windows seals at home. :(

I'd have thought it's far too chilly to put them into an unheated greenhouse for another month yet, even in your southerly location.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I'm a newbie and cucumbers have been my first mistake lol. Next year I'll leave it to a lot later before sowing! Flipping things are taking up tons of room on my coffee table at present.

My second year trying them. Last year they went belly up. This year I'm trying again.

Wish I'd read this thread earlier.  Just potted on my 3 cucumber seedlings and put them in the unheated greenhouse.   Oops.

I have the opposite problem here in the subtropics - cucumbers hate our humid summers so I've found the best time to plant here is autumn as it cools down and dries up. Pretty easy getting to seedling stage but after that it's definately not the easiest plant to grow  :) Gotta, get the season window just right, then grow a ton, and pickle'em  :D

Usually, growing veg gets easier with experience. With cucumbers though, I have found it has become more challenging every year! When I first grew them I had no problems at all, then it all started to go downhill.
