Guess what I found in my bed!
« on: March 20, 2012, 16:45 »
Whilst digging my carrot/Parsnip bed I uncovered a chickens egg. Did a quick search over the Internet and the only culprit I could find is possibly a fox who has stored it for later. Could it be anything else? Don't know how it got onto my allotment as it has a 6 ft fence all around.

At first I thought you meant your sleeping bed  Couldn't think how a fox hid an egg there.

Sounds about right,  if you want to deter the fox, ensure the top of your fence is as wobbly as can be.  The fox can only climb over the fence if it is steady right to the top.  You could even highten it.    Cheers,     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Someone on our site pulled a carrot and found a gold ring embedded into it! The carrot had obviously grown straight through it. The person concerned had rented this plot for over 30 years - at least it should cover his rent!
Acquired a third of a plot in January 2011 which was extended to three quarters in December 2011. Managed by myself and my 6 year old son.

Rats sometimes take eggs away.  Brian has seen them do it.  One will lay on its back holding the egg between its feet and the other one will pull him by his tail.  But I thought they took them back to their nests rather than bury in gardens.

LOL - my first thought too

I think someone buried a door on my plot at some point (might have been part of a shed or compost bin but the wood has long gone) - I keep finding bits of metal such as a hinge, some screws, a door handle and last year I unearthed a letter flap (one of those spring loaded snap your fingers off types)

Urgh!! I did wonder about rats but also thought that they would take them back to their nest. I'm hoping that it was a fox.  Re: all other peoples finds. It's a shame we don't find buried treasure not the useless but weird items found. x

With our garden been a typical new build, when I have converted parts of it for my veg patch I keep finding what they couldn't be bothered to put in the skip.

Scaffold Pole, Barbed Wire, Telephone Wire, Breeze Blocks, Etc. The list goes on. Nothing valuable as of yet   lol

I think someone buried a house in my veg bed judging by the size of the stones that come up every year.

I have taken on my first plot in December, which the last guy had used for fruit for a number of years I have found all manner of stuff including a double wide row of house bricks running the entire length of the plot on both sides which was nice.

Have you any Chinese neighbours?

..They bury eggs in soil until they turn grey & jelly like ('1000 year eggs' I think they are called)..I've seen them for sale in marktets neatly stacked up in dirt...if you've not thrown it away perhaps try it for breakfast...I'd bet it's an acquired taste mind
