Courgette roots infested
« on: June 07, 2011, 08:14 »
Planted my courgettes out a few weeks ago. They haven't done much due to rubbish weather but noticed last night one was particularly poorly. On closer inspection looked like yet another leatherjack victim, except the stem is as big as my forefinger. Started looking around base of plant and it came away with hardly any roots. There were loads of tiny thin White insects that almost looked like baby White millipedes just below surface of soil. Only a few cm long and v thin. Any ideas what it is and how best to nuke them?  Thankfully no sign of them on other plants in bed... Yet!

Picture would be helpful.
If it was me, I would dig up the plant (as you have more) and kill all the bugs so they dont spread onto the others, something has clearly hatched, must admit to never having this problem yet.
Punk isn't dead...it's underground where it belongs. If it comes to the surface it's no longer punk...it's Green Day!

These are probably symphalids or springtails. (Google images) Springtails escape by jumping if you disturb them. Symphalids are slower moving. Usuall these live deep in the soil and eat organic matter. In dry times they gather round roots and bite them, probably for moisture. If there are enough they will damage the root system.
