Broad Bean Weevils?
« on: March 29, 2009, 22:53 »
Hello. :) 1st timer here! New to forums and just required an allotment 3 weeks ago. Went to check all was well there today only to find something has eaten all our broad bean plants. This was our first crop we planted so you can imagine how disappointed we are. I think it may be weevils, as they were crawling with little beetle like things. we had also sown some beans but not sure how to protect them from the beetles as they grow. Any advice?

had the plants completely disappeared or just the leaves been nibbled? if they had just left their marks round the leaves they should just carry on growing and still provide a crop.

not really sure about protecting them as never had them that bad, i know you can buy a spray but i dont think its organic so it depends where you stand on that one

Weevils sit on the edge of the leaf and gnaw semi circular knotches.  Before they hatched the weevil grubs will also have been eating the roots.

The beans should grow away from them.

Some of the plants had completely been eaten! The weevils were all over the remaining ones. We pulled them up and disposed of them as we were worried we'd infect everyone elses beans! One of the gentlemen who has an allotment next to ours said he'd never seen it so bad. That's us, don't do things by half! We planted a row of seeds next to the plants, so we'll see what happens with them. (Don't like broad beans much anyway, think somebody was trying to tell me something!) Lol!

I think I may have a similar situation, albeit to a lesser degree, so how do I get rid of these nasty blighters?
