Moving young fruit trees advice please
« on: December 03, 2012, 15:04 »
I'm moving home in two weeks time and I want to take my young fruit trees with me.  Thankfully they are now dormant, so what is the best way to do this without lugging a huge amount of earth with them?

Also, I have a patio peach in a huge pot which is very heavy.  Can I do the same to this as the others and move tree and pot without the soil?

Over to you, oh wise ones. :)
Cheese makes everything better.

Usual advice is to keep as much soil on the root ball as poss - but they sell them to us bare-root so I don't see why you couldn't do the same thing. Just lift as much root as possible.

They may need a bit of root pruning, and trim the top to match if you do.

Good luck  ;)

Would it be a good idea to put a plastic bag over the roots if they don't get planted straight away?

yes, and give them a good soaking now and again if planting is delayed for a while and they look like they're drying out.
