hi all,is anyone elses onions going to seed? loads of mine have! gave them a good watering yesterday,and today little seed heads have appeared :ohmy:ive promptly snapped them off(sniffing the delicious oniony smell on mi fingers at the same time  :lol:).will they now grow on as normal?

They will grow, but will always have the base of the seed stalk in the middle of the bulb. This will go off quickly, that's why they should be used first.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have quite a few that went to seed and they all 'need to be used first' :( Perhaps I'll make a huge batch of onion soup :blush:.

One question - many of my onions are now big enough to lift. Is there any inherent disadvantage to lifting them early? (these are all over-wintering types and I don't expect to be able to store them). Should I do anything specific if I lift them now, or just lift and use straightaway?

I just lift and use as I want them. No special preparation if they're not going to be stored, just eaten.

i used to buy red baron onion sets , but evey year they went to seed , i grow all my onions from seed now , we in deepest darkerst east yorkshire
