Any Asparagus experts?
« on: April 27, 2020, 20:01 »
I have a 4 year old asparagus bed stalks seem to be much thicker this year is this normal or do I need to give them more water. Have given them some liquid seaweed feed , my soil is a little heavy so mulched surface this winter with leaf mould to help them break through to surface.
Variety was "Placosesp Green" from Kings seed spring 2016.

Surely thick asparagus spears is 'a good thing' (unless they're inedible?)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

How come it is never like that when you buy in shops.
Getting some thinner ones now , it is all getting eaten just more of the thicker bases going in soup.
Going to try some cow manure on it next winter to see if it will grow taller without getting so thick , 3/4" dia some of them seems excessive.
Bulk of my plants are female and I allow them to stand after I stop picking to replenish the roots. pic of them last year.

Try holding each spear by the ends and bending until it snaps - use the top end for cooking and the tougher lower end in soup if you wish (still don't think you have a problem or are doing anything wrong.)
