Does egg laying make them noisy?
« on: April 01, 2012, 09:53 »
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but it's all such a new world and the books I've got aren't that great but you folks are wonderful at helping.  This is day two of egg laying.  I think it's only my Black Star who is laying and she has suddenly taken to making an almightily racket for about an hour, then when I go in there's an egg.  Is this normal and will she (all of them) do this for ever because 6.30am isn't lovely for me (they're under my bedroom window) or the neighbours I imagine!

If you mean the BOK, BOK, BOK that is the normal "aren't I clever, I have laid an egg" announcement to let everyone know.  Not all of my hens do it and not every time.

If it it not that noise it could just be that she wants to be let out of the coop once she realises it is light.  An automatic pop hole opener should sort that or an early morning stumble, half asleep to let them out and then stagger back to bed!   ::)

Oh she's out and about when she does it and it is a BOK BOK BOK BOOOOOKKKKK but for an hour before she laid the egg.  Maybe it's because it's new for  her too!  I only hope she quietens down and the others don't follow suit because it's not restful for anyone.

It is normal but they don't seem to do it every time.  She may be complaining that another hen is hogging the next box.  If they are not roosting and sleeping in the boxes that could be making her noisier.

Oh yes some are very noisy probably saying something along the following:-
I want to lay an egg!!,
Oh look at me I've laid an egg!!,
I'm doing my job of egg laying why aren't you?
My eggs sat there waiting for a broody hen to go sit!
I'm just kidding so I can watch the human come running, Oh what fun
When she comes running gals trip her over
Staffies are softer than you think.

That's funny joyfull!  I think ear plugs may be in order and many boxes of eggs to placate the neighbours.  It may also be showing off because she's the only one doing it so far.  The others aren't hogging the nest box, they seem most respectful of her laying status!
