Hi

I've got a plan for  an Aframe coop and run just wondered if anyone had any alternatives. Guess I have a space about 9x5 and intend to keep at least 3 chooks.

That sounds good CE :D

The run size 9x5 (presumably feet) less a bit for the coop area would be just about right for 3 hens !

Hi Aunt Sally

Yes it is 9 x 5 feet.  Any advice on breeds I'd like to keep pure breed as they seem to less susceptible to ills. Looking for something nice to look at and a good egg layer.

What makes you think pure breeds are less susceptable to diseases CE.  I don't think they are.  They may live longer but that's often because they lay fewer eggs than a hybrid hen!  They go broody more often too

I built mine from this web site...
http://www.onestonesoup.org/ProjectChicken

It has plans on it (When I built mine I had to do the old Measured the screen and make some assumptions!!!!!)

My picture is of my son helping to build it so it cant be that hard.

This is plenty size (I dug the ground out below the coop to allow the full floor area to be used.

Hope this is of some help

Thanks for the replies I'll look that site up Flyin Chickens.

Aunt Sally It's just the perception I get from reading books on keeping chooks maybe I've read it wrong and it was specific to one breed.  What breed would you say is the best for a novice keeping a few birds at home. BTW there is always someone in or around the garden they may well get to free range at times.

Must be honest I like the look of Lavender Araucanas and the idea of coloured eggs. But I am a sucker for something that looks cute  Ta

I have a 'Golden Cockerel' build your own coop book that you can borrow. :thumright:

Aunt sally is correct about her assessment of hybrids versus pure breds, but I've been more than happy with the strain of light Sussex that I keep. :D

Here is a nice link with a lot of pics so it may take a minute or two to load up. The pics are thumbnails so just click on them to enlarge.

And actually both the Frizzle and the Naked Necks have better immune systems then other chickens do.
