As a boy scout I would visit the chip shop and buy a bag of crackling, they are no longer allowed to sell crackling on health grounds

OH visited his mother land (Scotland) recently and returned with a carrier bag full of ready sliced breakfast goodies all in packs - square sausage, haggis, black pudding, white pudding, fruit pudding and tattie scones  ::)

I have chucked a load in the freezer to save him from himself.  A full Scottish breakfast makes a full English look positively low fat and healthy  ;)

A million years ago my mother and I would wait, mouth watering, for the roast pork or beef to come out of the oven so we could dip some bread in the 'goodness' in the bottom of the roasting pan...extra fat added if the meat was lean.  :ohmy:Then the dripping would be poured into a dish before the gravy was made with the residue and we would have it on bread the next day and hope there was some jelly underneath (much disappointment if not) Lovely on fresh bread with salt and pepper. :D

Can still taste it now even though I've been veggie for well over thirty years!

My mother used to fantasise about 'cheese dreams', which turned out to be fried cheese sandwiches..:0]

She was a girl guide back then, so perhaps that made it alright!

Ha never met anyone else who knew about cheese dreams . I used to work in a residential nursery in London & they were one of the teas for the children, the lady that cooked them was called Win, she started frying them at about 2pm for tea at 4pm   they were known as Win's nightmares

Calling in at the chip shop after 'Brownies', more years ago than I care to remember, and getting a packetful of 'scratchings' (the bits of broken and overcooked chips scooped out of the oil ), wrapped up in newspaper. I think we used to pay one old penny for them. Walking home in the winter eating them after poking a hole in the bag, vinegar scented steam wafting out, and the 'chips warming our hands.

My mother in law who has now sadly passed away used to do fried crumpets with her full English.

Actually quite nice, I'd forgotten all about them until seeing this thread, think I'll have to buy some crumpets
