pest control
« on: June 14, 2011, 11:11 »
Helo my green fingered friends, I have a polytunnel with tomatoe plants, aubergine, chilli and bell peppers. I have introduced six french marigold plants to attract hover flies, but have just read that they should not be too close as they may attract aphids. As this completely defeats the object, I am left quite confused and would like to hear from anyone experienced in this area.

I use marigolds near tomatoes to deter white fly which is an aphid so I would say that you have been misinformed. I also use tagentes for same reason.

I'd agree with Richard here, we usually plant a few in the greenhouse right under the toms.

As the others have said, I'd check your information, as I always plant marigolds in the greenhouse to deter white fly and it does a very good job.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. Will rest ( given the chance ) a lot easier now.
You can't beat the voice of experience. Growing stuff from seed is great, but I can't believe how protective I have become.

Unless it gets chomped clean through the stem as one of mine did. Now, which flowers do mice not like? ::)
