It's good for things like brassicas, and fruit bushes, but not where potatoes are going, as it raises soil ph like lime does.
You can also add it to the compost heap in fine layers.

as we use only wood on our wood burner all winter we have quite an amount   of wood ash that i use on my onion bed come spring and prior to plantings i don't use it as said on my potato plots
