« on: February 10, 2015, 12:18 »
Hi All,
Through l would try sweet potato this year put them half in water back in December
They have plenty of roots but no shoots so far.
Just wondering if they ok, do they normally take so long for the slips to shoot?
Thanks

Yes, can do IME. Particularly (I believe) Supermarket ones that have been sprayed to deter them from sprouting in storage ... if you store your own, for future years, you won't have a problem with the chemical growth inhibitors.

Thanks for the reply Kristen, l did wash them before setting out, just seems funny that that they produce roots but not shoots!
Would have thought that any inhibitors would have affected roots as well.

The extra day-length from now on may start the shoots into growth

Thanks Mum,
I've got them on a south facing window in a warm utility room with a mirror behind them.
Guess it's just a waiting game then.

i've found getting them to sprout very hit and miss. i would get as many started as you can and hopefully you'll get enough healthy plants by spring.

i started some before Christmas, they shouted quite well but have lost a lot of slips for some reason. i guess due to lack of light, at this time of year you have to balance the amount of light with heat.

my ones last year didn't seem to produce a great crop. so i'm hoping to get the plants bigger inside before planting and have just manured the ground well to hopefully improve things.

good luck.
