Rhubarb crowns with no shoots
« on: January 26, 2012, 16:04 »
Due to redesigning the plot, ive today had to drudge up the rhubarb patch (plot no. 3 will be there!). In clearing the mound of subsoil that was ontop of it, any new shoots have been cut off. What im left with are several very thick chunks of root/tuber, cut into a number of chunks but with no aparent new growth on them (although there quite obviously not dead yet)

What i'd like to know is, if i chop these into suitable sized pieces and replant them, what are the odds that they will take?

If you manage to kill rhubarb, you get a medal.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

A knighthood would probably be more fitting!

If you want that much rhubarb, go for it.

Are you kidding?
I have killed every rhubarb crown I ever planted!
I even tried growing in containers and still only got two years out of it before it died.

I've killed the last couple too, and the latest one wasn't looking too good last year either.

well, in that case i'll lobb a few suitably sized chunks in somewhere and see what takes.

Might put it in a tub, im not that keen on it so it will only ever get used in a crumble

ooooh. don't put it in a tub, please find a corner where you can put it in the ground and you'll get far more for your crumbles

How about rhubarb and ginger or rhubarb and orange jam

Don't put it in a tub as the roots will quickly outgrow the space and be both starved and thirsty unless you're prepared to feed and water them twice a week. Find somewhere in your yard - an unused corner where it can be decorative.

Same here, except the stuff I put in pots died too! I have never been able to grow it and hope that I will discover some on the allotment that someone else planted before me.
