Building a home for chooks...
« on: June 24, 2008, 08:20 »
Hi,

Thought I'd start a new thread for this as I'm new to keeping chooks and am about to embark on building a henhouse and run in the next week or so!

Any advice/tips would be welcome. I've got a few questions to start with...

Joints for the house/run - nailed...or screwed?

Roof covering - using shiplap/tongue and groove to clad the whole house. Will this be weather proof on the roof or should I line it with a waterproof liner (felt etc) then clad on top?

Should I put a 'roof' on the run itself to keep it dry in wet weather?

I'm sure I'll find new questions as it progresses but as I say, any tips/advice very welcome!!

Thanks

Mick

Hi Mick

Use screws for the hen house

I would use onduline for the roof you can buy it in B&Q along with all the fixings and I would also put a roof on the run as this will protect the birds from the weather and if ever there is an outbreak of BF then you won't have to dash round trying to get something to cover it.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I think covering at least part of the run is a good idea, if not the whole lot. The soil or bark etc gets saturated when it rains and they can end up wading about in a mud bath which then gets the house filthy.  They seem to quite like it though

Mick

Consider the Happy hutch before building. I couldn't buy the materials for the cost. Delivery in 24 hours  :)

Thanks Planner!

Definitely a good buy...not 'quite' what I was after but I think with a little adaptation it could be good!! Having a little think but yeah...it's close as to whether you actually could buy the materials for that price?

Cheers!
