I have had varying success growing sweetcorn in a polytunnel in mid Wales, outside crops have been a  disaster. Has anyone any recommendations of varieties best suited to the welsh climate. The last few seasons have seen very warm April, May and June months but vey poor  July and Augusts.

We have had success with swift  does not grow too tall about 4 feet and are really sweet
not being tall it does not suffer so much wind damage which may suit you

not to sure about the Welsh climate but the varieties we have been growing have produced very good crops Goldcrest [mid season] and Golden hind [early]

grew ours on a bed of well rotted horse manure on raised beds put plenty of cobs in the freezer and they freeze well and cook well good sweet taste

these varieties may be worth a try good luck

What problems have you been encountering?

It occurs to me that you may be having problems with wind pollination in a polytunnel, rather than having variety-specific problems?

I live in Wales, admittedly near the coast, and have had no trouble with growing sweetcorn itself, it's the pests that eat it before I can get to it (found rats chewing on them one day - ate the whole lot), managed to get one of the rats though, also squirrels a problem too. They were surrounded by netting as well, I think they burrowed under. The problem is, they seem to know when they're ripe before I do !! I've used Swift AGM.
