Free Doors
« on: March 01, 2009, 22:25 »
I notice on here and at the allotment that people get hold of old doors. I think people are getting them from double glazing people, but I am not sure. Does any one on here know? How do you go about it? I am asking cos my frond door is a bit broken, I have secured it but now it wont open (I can use the back) and I am still job hunting so still skint . Ahhh the trials of life.

Also I have a saab hatchback, will a door fit in that? It is quite big for a hatchback, like vectra size.

Is your front door timber ?

If so the usual size is about 30" or 33" wide x 78" tall I think.

You'll need to measure your saab but you may need to tie your hatch down. If you see any advertised, make sure you measure first. I've had freebies before and got the wrong size

 Spot on 33" 78" how do you know that? and yes timber.

I have an indoor door I just tried in the car and that fit no problems, so at worst I will need bungey cables

Do they really give em away tho?

If you go along flutter your eye lids and smile and turn on the charm hahahahha im sure you will get a door tell them its for a project that you doing at the plot so they dont know its for your house they might let you pick from a bunch of doors.  They might not be so happy letting you take it for the house tho ???
Thanks

I was wondering about that. I would rather be honest, but I need a door! Will it not look weird when I start measuring tho?

Have you tried Freecycle ( www.freecycle.org ) ?

I often see a door going on our local one.

Could you offer your old door in exchange ??

Seems fair. That way the someone still gets the use of a door and you become secure. I can't see anyone complaining. recycling is recycling. :)

I would have no problem with that at all.

I went round a few double glazing places today and most were well up for the idea, so thats good news. On the other hand I made a rookie mistake in that their fitting places and showrooms are not the same place. I will be hitting the fitting places tomorrow. I am gonna get some glass for a cold frame too! They were really nice people so I am pleased.

It is amazing what you can get when you ask nice too, that was a big part of it I think. I only got one snotty receptionist.

And yes I hate seeing things go to the tip unnecessarily.

Try your local Council recycling centre. Our local one seperates out doors that people take in and puts them carefully to one side instead of throwing them in with the scrap wood.
