"Glazing" A Greenhouse
« on: July 29, 2009, 16:58 »
Hi All,

I picked up the frame of a greenhouse a few months ago and also some very old and creaky glass that might partially glaze it.

I have been uintending to reglaze the house with a combo of old and new glass but I am wary of ther old glass and there has been some vandalism of glass on our site lately.

are there any other alternatives to glaze the greenhouse, someone mentioned bubble wrap but I do not like this idea?

I will be using 5mm perspex, clear strong and better light transmission than glass easier to cut than glass, virtually unbreakable and looks a lot nicer than polycarbonate.

Braders,

Yes I have a place I am using at the moment, spoke with them today actually.
To save you time and effort, let me explain that I have been looking for a perspex supplier for quite a while before settling on one, cost being the main criteria. ( perspex is perspex but I have seen links on here for perspex that works out much more expensive)
The Company I use is R.E.D.
http://www.plasticonline.co.uk/index.php?act=viewCat&catId=14

The link should open on the clear acrylic page ( same thing as perspex, a few different ways to name it )
You will see a sheet of clear 4mm perspex costs £12:50  for   1500X 500  a piece of polycarbonate the same size is nearly £30:00

They have a minimum delivery charge of £7:50 and options for larger orders.
They are close enough for me to drive to and collect so have not paid much attention to shipping further afield so best to email them and ask, or better still ring, and ask for Ruby who will be able to answer all your questions.
Hope to have some pics soon of my greenhouse build with the perspex in place.

PS  I suppose if you are using the original clips you will have to stick to the thickness of the original glazing.....

When I research something I do it exhaustively.. cost quality  recommendations etc etc. If anyone can find a better deal for perspex I would be interested!

doesn't polycarbonate stay clear longer than acrylic when exposed to the sun...or am I getting them confused? I thought our shed window was acrylic and it is now greeny/yellow and cloudy (we have hed the shed 10+yrs and I'm not sure how long it's been cloudy) ???
