If he'd been more of an expert he would tell you not to shop there in the first place as they rip you off.

I like Martin Lewis generally but sometimes I think he loses the plot.

If you are really worried about saving money you would not shop in a large DIY store, you would go to decent local suppliers, where you often pay less than 25% the price that the large chains charge.

I have spent a lot of time recently in my local plumbing shop, they are helpful, and astonishingly cheap.  I had to pop into a large chain and was browsing and noticed some of the prices.

They had a 1/2 inch ball tap for £14.99, I have bought a lot of these recently as part of a project I am currently working on and I pay £1.60 for them in my local store.

If you want to save money, go to your local timber / electrical / plumbing merchant, give the big DIY chains a miss.

While I agree in principle with you Steve, there are two problems with using smaller suppliers ...  The first is the limited opening hours - the big chains are still open when I get off work, the hardware shop shut its doors two hours earlier.  Yes, I could battle my way into town on a Saturday, but that is so not my favourite way to spend my limited free time.  The second is a bit of a chicken and egg - there may not be a good hardware shop near you and builders merchants can be notoriously sniffy about the amateur and (sometimes) the female.  Plus of course most of the builders merchants are part of chains.   Granted if we used the small/specialist/independent shops more, there would be more of them - but we cant turn that clock back.

So - horses for courses??   ;)

Steve, I would certainly agree that B&Q and Homebase for that matter have become expensive. I only go to Homebase when they have one of their 10 or 15% off days.

My son gave me a £20 B&Q voucher for C*******s and I`ve been there a few times looking to spend it, but haven`t yet, because although it`s his money I`m still looking for VFM. The 15% off will help give me this.

Thanks for the link gandan, I'm sure it will be useful to those who live near enough to one of these stores. :)

Re greenhouse.............have a look at greenhouses at other suppliers, I don't think B&Qs are any different to other models ............unless you start paying loadsamoney!

Unless you live in a wind tunnel, or next to a building site..............................?

My take on BQ is that some of their big ticket items are reasonably priced but then they make massive mark ups on the smaller everyday items. Example a few years ago I wanted to install CH to my house that I had just bought. Their boiler prices were very reasonable as were their radiators, but the pex pipe and the quickfit fittings were incredibly over priced. I bought boiler and rads from BQ and all the rest of the kit came from Toolstation, saving a very modest sum.
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.
