Pressure sprayer advice on choices
« on: August 07, 2012, 17:55 »
I apologise if this has been asked already but I have searched the forum and couldn't find any specific advice so thought I'd start a new topic.

We have just bought some glyphosate concentrate for clearing the masses of couch grass across our (mostly uncleared) allotment. We would like to use a pressure sprayer, as has been recommended on here rather than a watering can, but cannot decide on brand, model or volume.  Our allotment size is about 10m by 10m.

There seems to be a considerable difference in cost between the hozelock models and the budget silverline brand types but with no experience of sprayers are the better brands worth it?

Also, given that once we have sprayed most of the allotment a couple of times I presume  we will likely  only want to spray smaller outbreaks, is a larger volume (10l +) sprayer unnecessary given the cost of a smaller (5l) sprayer?

Many thanks

Chris

5 litre capacity is ample for the size you want to spray.I use a 15 ltr one around the fields but use a 5ltr one for patches Iv'e missed.
It will help if you put some lines of sticks accross so when you beak off to refill you don't miss or double spray

Many thanks. I'll go with one of the cheaper 5l ones that has reasonable feedback on amazon for now I think.

Thanks for the quick reply.

we got one in asda going cheap at the end of last year, it was supposed to be for spraying preservative on fences and sheds, but it does a decent job as a sprayer.

Just be very careful when spraying and make sure it is a windless day as killing a plot neighbours crop will make you very unpopular.  This is the reason why a lot of us stick to using a watering can.

As well as spraying on a windless day spray drift can be minimised by slightly opening the nozzle at the end of the lance, this gives larger heavier droplets and  covers a narrower area per pass.

Many thanks. I'll give it a trial run with water first but thankfully I am on the extreme edge of the plot and will put some windbreaks up too to hopefully prevent anything I miss.
