Please Identify.
« on: May 05, 2010, 11:18 »
I share my allotment with a load of chinese folks who obviosly grow a lot of oriental type veg. One of the ladies was kind enough to give me about 20 bulbs to plant but becuase she spoke no english coudnt tell me what they where, all the chinese folk seem to grow them so they are obviosly popular.

Any ideas what it is & how I cook/eat it?
Bulb, not an onion or garlic but I imagine very similer.

 Here is a photo

 All help appreciated.

I generaly just stick things in the ground green side up.

Well I've googled chinese onions (seemed the obvious thing to do!) and they seem to be used either like spring onions or grown into bulbs. In other words, not much like what you have in your picture.

If you hadn't mentioned the Chinese connection I would have said they are shallots.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

They may well be, just because its grown by a person of oriental origin doesnt mean the plant cant be european I suppose.

Digger Tom, it might be worth a trip to a Chinese market to ask exactly what it is (I'm sure you'd recognize the bulb in the shop) and how to use it. The green tops are very popular here chopped for soup toppings, and if indeed it is shallots, it's the preference in oriental cuisine over regular onions.
