quick growing - evergreen - screening ??
« on: August 13, 2010, 12:42 »
Hi all,

I've got an allotment and have recently acquired three blue 210 litre barrels. Whilst these will be brilliant for harvesting water from my greenhouse roof, they are very stark and a blot on the landscape!

Whilst I could paint them, I'm concerned this might not be a permanent fix and I don't want paint flakes all over my allotment, hence I would like to plant a small run of screening.

The screening would only need to be about 7 feet wide by 5 or 6 feet tall and only deep enough so as to screen the bright blue barrels.

Can anyone recommend some non-invasive planting for screening? I would like this to be effective in the winter also. Any suggestions greatly received!

Thanks,

Chris

Lucky you. I still haven't managed to get hold of one of these. :(

I'm struggling thinking of a suitable plant, how about bamboo? Or those rush-type screens you can buy, or hazel hurdles?  :)

Bamboo did spring to mind but you need to be very careful about variety - many varieties are invasive indeed.

The rush screens are very effective too
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

not cheap and not quick but what about bay bushes.
Or trellis painted for winter but carrying peas, beans etc in summer.
Comfrey is useful but dies back in winter as wouidl a nettle patch but both can be used for liquid feed. Bamboos are not that evasive if you get the right variety. What about a compost heap?
Raspberries or blackberries woudl get my vote though.
