Which type of grass seed for a new lawn/playarea?

Could anyone recommend a grass seed that would give a nice lawn look, but is also hardwearing. (Three kids) Also, am i right to assume that around now would be a good time to sow?

Go for a "family" type of grass seed, it will have rye grass in it which is the tough one, yes nows a good time to sow, if you have already prepared your patch for sowing then rake in a dressing of super phosphate now and sow in a few days time , it will help the root system develop quicker.
If you have other criteria like shade then it's best having a good look at some of the better quality seed available they may be something more suitable than general purpose family seed.
