What do you think might be wrong with these strawberries?  I inherited a few plants with the plot, so they could be ancient, could that be part of the problem? I think it is more than just rot.

I have some like that as well.. mine are growing through fabric and are first year plants from runners last year.  hopefully someone will come on here with an answer.

Not sure what particular aspect your pic is referring to Rachael. 

Just looks like the early stages of fungal decomposition to me, which is all too common in wet weather, especially with fruits which are touching each other and the soil and therefore staying wet for longer.

If you have a look at Google images for "strawberry botrytis" you can see strawberries in various stages of mouldiness.

I would agree with Jay - I have loads this year going off - no doubt the constant rain has not helped.

If the berries are showing patches of brown before turning red then it is leather rot.

They look quite different from the 'normal' mouldy strawberries. They start to look funny before they start to rot, there is patchy discoloration and lumpiness but the fruits still feel firm, not soft and mushy like normal mouldy strawberries. I didn't notice whether there were brown patches before turning red, but it could be leather rot (which I hadn't heard of before) I suppose.
