Not having a good spell with hens, last week an older hen died and today one of the new hens.  Hubby had been down to check the water and food and collect the egg (yes, egg, only ONE egg today ) and he noticed a small hen was wheezy, then half an hour or so later she was dead :cry:  He didn´t tell me though the hen was ill.
The other ill hen (bought from the same place) is eating and is still in isolation.
I´ve checked the other hens the best I can and all seems ok.  I will be able to check better this evening once they go to roost for the night.
At first I thought that the dead hen was Emu, but she is still here
Today, one way and another it is a bad day!

Oh Pamela, how sad.  Can you get any Baytril out there? Might be best to treat them.  Sorry you are having a bad time :cry:

Mumsy, what is baytril?  I will try a google to see if I can find it.  Bad day for internet here it keeps stopping  :x

Its an antibiotic, mine have had it when they were poorly with coughs etc, cleared it up within a couple of days, need to treat for 7 days, don't use any eggs whilst treating or for another 7 days.  Hope you can sort it out.

I´ve got an antibiotic from the vet, it´s in the garage, so I will look tomorrow to see what it is called.
This afternoon I noticed 4 large holes in the neighbours olive grove the other side of the chicken house and lots of rat droppings :shock: so I have put poison down them.  I don´t like poisoning animals but we have set traps and only caught one rat and that was about 4 months ago.  The neighbour had a rat running about her patio last night :shock:
We will move the log pile over the weekend to check under there too.

I checked over the other hens last night once they were on their roost- they were not amused.   All looked ok.  
The hen in isolation is eating (she ate a bit of the cat food and left the rest) she ate the spinach I left. Her poo´s are normal.  There was a  kind of fishy smell from her beak, that has gone now, no smell last night. Her eye is still shut, it opens now and again.  She is drinking the water with the antibiotics in ok
