What feed?
« on: November 02, 2021, 10:03 »
What do people feed their laying, free ranging hens, this time of year?
I have layers pellets for them to graze on all day and late afternoon I give them mixed corn so that I can get them into a smaller run, where their coop is. I am now wondering if that is enough, especially as the weather is getting colder. Should I let them have a mix of layers and mixed corn all day?
It would  be handy to know what other people do.
I have one hybrid Rock type and down to one Wellsumer,  one has just died😢.
I have kept chickens in the garden for years but this recent death has upset me and I have lost all confidence in my ability to take care of them, so please forgive my odd question.

I would stick with what you are doing. If you offer corn all day, they will eat that and ignore the pellets.

Corn is very high calorie and does not have the added nutrients of pellets. Fine as an afternoon feed and will fill them up nicely before roosting, but a treat not a main food for laying hens  :)
