too late for main crop spuds and onion sets?
« on: May 27, 2009, 12:15 »
I haven't had time to get my main crop planted. I was told by one of the old boys on the site that I shouldn't bother.
Should a plant them or should I throw them out?
I also haven't planted most of the onion sets. Is it too late? if it’s too late, can I still plant them and will they over winter like spring onions or will they just run to seed?

thanks

If you've got the space, get them in.

We planted some spuds given to us in June one year. They were well wrinkled but we had a decent crop off them.

The onions won't over winter, but being late you may not get such a good crop, but there will be something.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Personally I would say if you have room plant rather than throw  :)

I've not quite got round to planting all my spuds yet but it's still only May and we've got about 5 months of growing season left. Onions are too late to get a decent crop but potatoes should be fine.  I'll hopefully get all mine planted on Saturday morning.

I haven't got a space yet, so can't plant them straight away.  I think I can plant second week of june. is that too late? How many weeks do they need?

I can't remember exactly but I think you'll need about 4 months from planting to harvest for maincrop spuds. If you get them in either this month or next they should be fine.
