succession planting/sowing
« on: June 01, 2012, 17:41 »
This is my 1st year on a allotment, so with the allotment beds getting filled with plants and seeds sowing, I wondered what could be planted in succession after they had been harvested. I've a 3year rotation plot ( roots, brassica's, legumes/others) Has anyone got some tips?

Most of those families are unlikely to be clear of the soil much before mid-autumn.  You could add green manure, or overwintering onions, but sometimes the soil doesn't hurt to have a rest.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I follow autumn sown onions with leeks and keep sowing dwarf beans and Broad Beans for a second crop.  I will lime the beds after the potatoes and follow with winter brassica as theses will be on my rotation plan for next year.  So yes, you can follow potatoes with leeks but just remember to put this on your rotation plan.

Yes, you can - not from scratch / seed, but using plants.

Agreed.
Potatoes break the soil up nicely for most other veg.
Shouildn't follow potatoes with later potatoes though as if they had any bug or blight thats likely to remain in the soil.

I do quite a lot od succession planting of salad stuff and herbs like basil - as soon as the previous seeds appear as shoots and a space appears I plant the next lot.
Or with the basil (I grow this in pots in the greenhouse) as soon as the seedlings appear I sow another lot.
Emma :)

I do this after lifting the early spuds. I think it would be too late to plant leeks after maincrop spuds though.

I got some leeks growing away well this year in cat litter tray, they are going to be a mare to separate but they look half the size of my end product last year already. Getting well on the way to biro stage.

Well done - ive grown mine in deeper pots/cells than normal and they do seem thicker than last years - albeit slightly (a lot....) smaller than a biro  ;)

Last year my leeks got nice and fat before I planted them - this year they are only biro refill size  :D

I also only have refill size but I seem to have 100's of them, went just a leetle bit overboard with the sowing this year.

I have to be honest, leeks beat me every time!
I'm never able to get them a decent size from seed so I have resorted to buying junior leeks from a small independent grower on the outskirts of plymouth!

They get a lovely size from then on. :D

Last year my Bleu de Solaise leeks went in after my early spuds.  They were in between biro refill and pencil size, ie not that big. However they raced away once in the ground and gave a superb crop.  So I wouldn't assume that because they haven't got to pencil thickness at planting time that they will be no good.
