Supermarket shallots

Can I plant supermarket shallots? If so is there a list anywhere of varieties that go in for winter and ones for spring? I will only buy uk grown ones so I can be sure they would grow here.

Supermarket shallots will probably grow, but I've not had much luck with them myself. I think they're sprayed or something as few grew, most disappeared.
