Quick garlic question
« on: November 09, 2013, 18:15 »
I planted some garlic cloves in pots about three weeks ago and put them outside. Some of the garlic is now nine inches high. Is this normal?

They have probably put on a growth spurt with all the rain we have had.  Are you going to plant them out in the ground

Obviously the garlic thinks it's normal so let it get on with it.could be a good sign.  They will slow up as it gets colder though. Most of mine planted around that time are about six inches high. But they are in the ground.

At some point yes.

It's the first time I've grown garlic, so am unfamiliar with the growth patterns. It just confused me a bit because I'm sure I read on here somewhere that garlic develops the root system first and doesn't put out a lot of top growth at this time of year.

Conditions were obviously just right for them.. They are usually much slower than that. Wait for the roots to develop a bit more and then plant them out.. They need the cold to bulb properly.

Have you looked to see what the root development is like?  I planted mine out from pots a couple of weeks ago and there was no obvious top growth.  When I shook them out, far from being dead, they all except one had really healthy roots.
So yours might be a bit pot bound, I would be having a look in the pots.

The roots are starting to come through the bottom of the pot, a couple significantly so, I guess I will have to put them in the ground asap.
