Have smelly feet caused this?!
« on: May 31, 2012, 09:06 »
My kids tomatoes in the wellies experiment hasn't gone too well!!

What has caused them to go yellow and a bit rubbish?

At 1st I thought overwatering so punched a load of holes in to drain it away but they are getting worse.  I fill them with home made compost, then topped off with potting stuff.

Maybe the wellies were too cheesy!!

Any ideas please?

Ta

not enough compost/root restriction - so not enough plant feed -would be my guess.

I think you need to put them in some proper pots or grow bags as they have huge roots, mine are in buckets with the bottom cut out and grow bags underneath so they have plenty of room for the roots to spread, I would move them while you still can or you will have to get new plants, check the blight watch calendar but I think it might be a litte early for blight but not sure.

You can probably sustain the plants with plenty of liquid feed but do not expect too much. Keep them going as they are fun but if you want a serious crop of tomatoes there are still plenty of plants in the gerden centres. Perhaps try again next year with size 12s.

I've heard that plants grown that way can tend to get a bit leggy.

(Well, someone had to say it............didn't they?)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
