Bare root strawberries
« on: September 06, 2011, 19:18 »
Hi

Order 30 today for the new plot which are due to arrive the end of October.  My question is should I plant them up in the allotment or would I be better off potting them up and giving some protection if the winter turns out like the last 3 years and then planting out in March?

Thanks

Jason

Strawberris need a period of cold to form flower buds, so if you do pot them up, make sure the protection allows for this  :)

A good tip for new strawberry plants is to first soak them 24 hours in a water and old muck solution (more water than muck). It will plump up any transit dehydration and get them off to a very good start. If you don't have muck, use a transplant fertilizer solution.

I bought some strawberry runners a few years ago, and when they arrived (in November )they were poor dried up things.
I was new to allotments then, but I had paid a lot for them, so I crept up to the plot and planted them hoping that no-one would notice.
The following  year they were so productive that everyone wanted runners from them.

I'm with everyone else, plant 'em.  They'll do better in the ground.  They're quite hardy and they need to get established to fruit next year.  (Mind you I had almost nothing off mine which I planted last Sept/Oct but they're lovely plants - hopefully next year.)

I replace some of my bed every year and have just bought 12 Elegance (bare rooted) from T&M.
They arrived looking very dry but I potted them up in 5" pots and watered well. I always use pots over the Winter because the current plants are still producing in the bed and I've got no other bed!
They have tripled in size already and they'll go through the cold no bother.

I planted my bare-root strawberries in October a few years ago soaked them first and planted  them up to the crown ,thought they couldn't possibly survive as they got hit by frost more or less straight away and now 2 years on they just grow and grow tough little things!!
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

I would say the same as others - I got 30 or so sorry looking dried up things from T&M and put them in late Oct just before that really cold November we had. I did not expect much but most came up. Those that did not I think I planted too deep so the crown was below ground level. Get them in!
