Poor crop of Tayberries
« on: June 15, 2020, 13:46 »
Hi folks, last year we harvested about 5 Kg of Tayberries from 4 plants. This year only about 30% of the flowers are forming fruits, the rest just seem to have rotted as they’ve started to develop. Anyone got any idea what has gone wrong or is it down to this cold temps at the end of May again! Cheers

Could be that, or have you had a dry spring like us in the SE. Here, the soil was like concrete, even with watering. So I gave up watering the fruit in the end - to do everything on the plot was just too much :(

The hot May has been a nightmare for many plants, including unlikely plants like beans etc!

Our blueberries have succumbed the same way as yours, such that we may dig them up and pot them somewhere else and use the space for another crop of something or other.

Tayberries are usually such aggressive plants, (not only the thorns, which can maim at ten paces), but I'm afraid you've just had a bad start this year, it's not your fault - next year will be better!

Thanks folks!  I suspected it was the weather. It's ironic that we only just finished using last year's frozen stocks of tayberries. Roll on 2021!!
