Potato chitting
« on: February 20, 2009, 18:07 »
Hi all I have had my potatoes chitting for around 3 weeks now and shoots are growing however some of the potatoes look a little soft/wrinkly is this normal or has something gone drastically wrong sorry if this is a ridiculous question I am just unsure how they should actually be looking please help if you can.

Soft/wrinkly is ok, its when they turn to mush that they need to be thrown out. Not sure what area you are in, but i've not even brought my seed yet, let alone started to chit any. Quite a few people on here have started theirs off, but for me its still a bit early.
Life is a heap of manure. Growing one minute, stinking the next.

Started mine off last week as otherwise they would have chitted themselves in the bag - big mistake last year!

Am trying to keep them cooler this year to prevent 'spindly' growth - mine went wrinkly before but were fine

Don' forget to note when you plant them - especially earlies or you may lose them to blight later on if left in too long

Good luck!

Lucy  :)

If you are planing on planting soon get some fleece over the rows, there is still time for some very hard frosts. Hope all goes well :)
