We pulled the spuds out yesterday to start chitting and they had decided to start on theire own. Some of the spuds have growths about 4 inches long. Do we pull these ones off to encourage more stronger ones or leave them.

I know 4" is too long,not sure if you break them off if they will resprout,someone more knowledgable will soon tell you.It sounds as if they have been in the dark too long.

Break them off and then put in a cool frost free place until planting time. Fresh sprouts will soon appear where you have broken them off.

Just make sure you keep them in a light place, eg. a greenhouse (under fleece) or a conservatory. If they turn white, and grow above 4", it means you have left them in the dark for too long

If you break them off, some will come back, but there is a very strong chance, atleast one will not come back. 4" is too long, i would risk it and snap them off.
