Digging over a new plot and there are a lot of thistles with roots that must be surfacing in Queensland.

Trouble is they tend to break off before I get all the root, will they grow back or do I persevere and try and get all the tap root ?

Cheers

Tom.

Most tap roots do re-grow from a small bit, so I'd imagine thistles would be the same, sorry.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Dig as much as you can then give the remaining exposed root top a short squirt of roundup. That should sort it.

Normally it does but if you've got a freshly exposed root, it will quickly permeate. Just don't leave it for a while and come back as the root top will quickly scab over and be more impervious. I also do this with huge dock roots that travel haflway across the world.

Thanks folks.

Roundup it is then.

Good tip that, to use it on newly exposed tap root. :)

If you want to go organic I think Father Chrismas's remedy works (hoe, hoe, hoe)   Sorry.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

When you think you have killed or removed every thistle the little devils will still come up in your crops. They will weaken if you keep on hoeing them off and eventually they will vanish - or will they?

An alternative approach is to dilute Roundup 1/3 in a wide necked container and apply it carefully with a paintbrush to each thistle without touching the crop. This is equally effective against dandelions, docks and couchgrass. The addition of wallpaper paste makes it non drip. Wear rubber gloves and you can steady the leaves to make sure they get a dose.

You used to be able to buy it as Tumbleweed Gel with a brush and red dye - probably been banned.

Do the best you can to dig out, plant potatoes, be prepared for a few coming backtackle them as individuals but you will kill most without any pesticides.
