Title: Greenhouse Potato Chitting
Post by: bobbyt on March 13, 2024, 16:21
Hi everyone, is this ok for chitting my potatoes in the unheated greenhouse (see photo), only I'm a bit short on shelving space, and they're not allowed in the house, and I plan to sow peas soon in modules/guttering so will need all the shelf space I can get. Thanks.

I'd cover them with some fleece/sacking/cardboard at night if the forecast is for less than 6 or 7C, as they'll rot if they get too cold. Good luck!

Thanks, i do keep an eye on the weather at night. By experience it would need to go to 2 or 3 deg before that happens, unlikely at the moment I think......but you never know  :). As long as its ok to shade them as in the pic, hopefully be ok.

I think there is a risk of the lower ones going leggy, which isn't a great idea.

Perhaps you could cycle the seed trays to ensure they all get a little light every now and then?

Can't comment on chitting as I never do. However, forecast for Bonny Galloway is minus 1 for some nights next week! Oh, and it's still raining - a mere 26mm since mid-night.

Update - my idea for stacking not working out, getting condensation on spuds in lower tiers hence wet patches on them.....not sure why.

If the trays they are on have gaps, is anything dripping from above the stac?

If the trays are solid plastic, I suspect that moisture is being given off by the spuds and condensing on the tray above, then dripping back down?

You probably need a bigger air and light gap between the trays?

our seed potatoes are stacked in a frost free place in chit boxes with plenty of light they have good strong shoots and  ready to plant out as soon as the weather warms up and I can plough the potato ground as its been far to wet hopefully the ground will dry up so we can get a start
